ABOUT

ME

Passionate About Inspiring Others

My career began as a teacher in schools in Northumberland where I carried out various roles including Head of Department, Head of Year and SENCo, before joining the School of Education at the University of Sunderland in 1995 as a Senior Lecturer in Education. I led the BA (Hons), PGCE and MA  Geography Education courses as well as managing the Humanities Team as Team Leader, before becoming Secondary Professional Year Manager, leading the secondary ITE Programmes to OFSTED Grade 1  Outstanding in 2011.

Following the success of the OFSTED Inspection, I became Head of the Department of Culture where several programmes in the department during the five years I was in that role achieved 100% student satisfaction ratings in the NSS.

I currently lead the diverse and vibrant School of Culture in the Faculty of Education and Society at the University of Sunderland. The School contains a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses including English, History, Modern Foreign Languages, Politics and TESOL, as well as courses including both pre- and in-sessional English for Academic Purposes (EAP), and the Certificate for Elected Councillors.

I have been the Head of the School of Culture since 2016, which has just been nominated (January 2018) for a City of Sunderland STARS Award for the strength and quality of the School of Culture's partnership with the City, especially the Library Service's annual Literature Festival. In 2017 all three English programmes achieved 100% student satisfaction in the NSS.

All of these achievements have been realised because of my commitment to both staff and student development. This is achieved through adopting both coaching and mentoring approaches as appropriate so that all involved feel valued and supported.
